The harvest season is about to start! Next Thursday, June 2, is our first distribution of 2011 and we’re celebrating a new year of fresh, local fruits and vegetables with an opening day picnic and party. Local musician Scott Sylvester will be playing his songs while you pick up your share. We hope you’ll stick around to hang out, eat and enjoy an evening with friends and neighbors.
Please bring a blanket and picnic dinner. This isn’t a potluck, so all you need is food for yourself and your crew. Farm Spot will provide drinks, cups, paper plates, napkins and plastic cutlery (feel free to bring your own utensils, cups, etc. if you’d like to cut down on the evening’s trash).
The party runs from 5:30 to 8:00, same hours as the distribution. Looking forward to seeing you there!
We welcome any other musicians who are interested in performing. E-mail us at farmspot@gmail.com if you are interested.
We’re using VolunteerSpot, an online sign-up and reminder tool, to schedule our distribution volunteer shifts. Please sign up now — here’s how it works in 3 easy steps:
Farm Spot is now accepting applications from two dedicated members to join our team. This is a rare opportunity to get your hands dirty and participate in this vital neighborhood organization.
Opening Distribution Supervisor
Responsibilities include overseeing all aspects of opening distribution, including directing volunteers, supervising the unloading of the delivery truck, set up of tables, etc. This is a commitment for every Thursday of the Farm Spot 2011 summer season (June 2 – Dec. 1) from 5:00pm to 6:45pm. This has the potential of being a core group role. A full-season of work will be compensated by a free vegetable and fruit share.
Volunteer Coordinator
Responsible for coordinating all volunteers including: ensuring that each shift has all volunteer posts filled; overseeing, communicating with, and tracking hours of all volunteers. This is a core group role which also involves regular core group meetings.
The Farm Spot Core Group
This is our 6th Season of bringing organic, local, sustainably farmed vegetables and fruit to Jackson Heights and we have some exciting improvements:
• Improved registration: We are using on-line registration software that will greatly streamline the sign-up process.
You will now be able to use a secure site to make a direct payment to Farm Spot, eliminating the need to mail in a check and wait for it to be manually processed. You’ll get a receipt of payment and confirmation that you are enrolled right away. (Just a note on pricing: The pricing is a little wonky this year because the new software calculated the total price based on a weekly breakdown and that’s why the total share prices are not rounded off.) Click here to register.
• If you would like to make a donation to our subsidized share program. Once your registration is complete, you’ll see an option “Make Payment”. If you click on this, you can enter any amount that you’d like to donate to the subsidized share program. Or, you can click here to dontate.
• New Web Site: We have launched a new web site and blog to keep you up-to-date on Farm Spot news and events.
It includes the “Green Queens” tab, a compilation of green resources in Queens and a “Recipes” section under “Veggie Tips,”where we invite you to submit your own recipes. If you would like to automatically receive updates from us each time we post, go to our web site and enter your e-mail address at the bottom of the page, where it says “subscribe to this blog.”
• New Subsidized Share Guidelines (SOLD OUT). Farm Spot remains committed to making our CSA financially accessible to our neighbors, and we are once again able to offer 15 subsidized shares for the upcoming season. The subsidies are funded by your fellow Farm Spot members. This year we’ve made some changes to the qualifications to increase access for people needing more financial assistance, so please read the guidelines carefully before submitting your registration. SOLD OUT: Please email farmspot@gmail.com to be put on a waiting list. Click here for details.
• Pick Up Time. Pick up will now be from 5:30 to 8:15pm due to changes in our lease with St. Marks Church.
Thank you all for making Farm Spot a great part of Jackson Heights! Please let us know if you have any questions about the application process at farmspot@gmail.com.
Registration for new members will begin April 11th and continue through May 2nd. Registration information will be posted here, so check back on the 11th.
Registration has begun for returning members and subsidized shares are sold out. If you meet the requirements for a subsidized share and would like to be put on the waiting list, please email farmspot@gmail.com.
